Free 15-minute consultation calls
Hi, I’m Jennifer.
Your Partner in Getting Un-stuck.
No textbook jargon. No 50-minute nodding sessions. Just grounded, practical therapy for real life.
"Real Talk"
Let’s be honest: taking the first step toward therapy can feel a bit like showing up to a party where you don’t know anyone and you’re pretty sure you’re underdressed.
I’m here to tell you: Come as you are.
Whether you’re currently holding it all together with caffeine and sheer willpower, or you’re ready to finally unpack that "baggage" you’ve been dragging around since 2014, I’ve got you. Coffee in hand, pajamas allowed, and no "perfect" answers required.
How I Work
I’m not the kind of therapist who just sits back, nods, and asks "And how does that make you feel?" for 50 minutes. While I value deep empathy, I value your time even more.
My approach is built on getting straight to the root of things and finding tools that actually work in the real world—not just on paper. We’ll likely laugh a little along the way, because healing doesn't always have to be solemn to be effective. Progress is the goal; perfection is a myth we’re going to debunk together.
The "Official" Stuff
Behind the casual tone is 4+ years of dedicated clinical experience helping individuals and couples navigate the messy, non-linear, and occasionally ridiculous parts of being human.

A Little Bit About Me
Outside of the therapy room, I’m a fan of bad jokes, overpriced lattes, cooking, reading, and really old animals (cats, dogs, horses, goats, chickens—you name it).
If you’re looking for a therapist who is grounded, direct, and doesn’t use clinical-speak to describe your life, reach out and let’s get to work.
Will We Click?
Therapy works best when the vibe is right—and if that includes a healthy dose of dad jokes and actual laughter, then we’re going to get along just fine. You’ll feel right at home here if you are:
An Expert Over-Thinker: Trapped in freeze/analyze mode and looking for real-world clarity.
A High-Achiever Running on Fumes: Performing at 100% on the outside while burnout and anxiety consume your energy behind the scenes.
A "Carrier": Exhausted from navigating anxiety, sadness, loss, or the sheer weight of caring for everyone except yourself.
Healing takes real work, but that doesn't mean our sessions have to feel somber, textbook, or stiff. I take your healing seriously, but I don't take myself too seriously.
Let’s see if my direct, pun-loving, latte drinking, no-nonsense approach feels like the right fit for your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Being human gets heavy, and trying to solo-parent your own brain through a rough patch is exhausting. You wouldn't hesitate to call a pro for a broken pipe—therapy is no different. Let’s take some of that weight off your shoulders.
Here are a few straight answers to questions I hear the most:
-
Because I believe your care should be guided by your actual goals, not a corporate clipboard.
Operating as a direct self-pay practice means zero insurance interference, total privacy, and complete flexibility:
No Mandatory Labels: Insurance requires a formal mental health diagnosis on your permanent medical record just to pay for a session. Most people coming here are looking for real-world clarity and practical tools—not a diagnostic label attached to their name forever.
Zero Insurance Gatekeeping: Insurance companies love dictating how long your sessions can be and how many weeks you’re "allowed" to get help. Keeping them out of the room means we get to decide what actually works for your life.
Couples Therapy Isn't "Sick Care": Insurance generally only pays to treat an individual's mental illness. Because couples work focuses on your relationship as a whole system rather than labeling one partner as "the problem," insurance rarely covers it.
Want to use out-of-network benefits?
I am always happy to provide itemized monthly Superbills (medical receipts) that you can submit to your provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
-
As long as it’s useful to you—and not a session longer.
There’s no mandatory checklist or fixed end date, and I'm not looking to keep you on my couch forever. Therapy moves at a pace that fits your real life, your goals, and your schedule.
For Individual Therapy:
We spend the first few sessions untangling what brought you in and getting clear on what relief actually looks like. From there, we jump straight into practical tools—like EMDR, somatic strategies, or mindset shifts—to calm your nervous system. Many clients start noticing real-world changes within the first few weeks, whether you're here for a quick tune-up or deeper ongoing work.
For Couples Therapy:
Sessions 1–3 (The Mapping Phase): We map out your relationship’s unique dynamics and pinpoint where the communication loops are breaking down.
Session 4+ (Actionable Tools): We jump right into active practice. When you apply these tools at home, you’ll start feeling a shift in the temperature of your relationship.
Beyond: Once you’re back on the same team, you decide how often we meet to keep things running smoothly.
-
Spoiler: No pop quizzes, no dramatic couch reclining, and zero pressure to have it all figured out.
Think of the first session as a low-key alignment meeting. We’re simply taking the temperature, mapping out what’s feeling heavy, and getting clear on what relief looks like for you.
We’ll cover some basic background so I can understand how your brain and world operate, but this isn't an interrogation. You don't need a polished presentation or a tidy summary of your life. You show up as you are, bring whatever chaos is currently living in your head, and we’ll start untangling it together.
By the time you walk out the door (or log off the screen), you’ll have a clear sense of how we’ll work together and we will begin to build a realistic game plan for what comes next.
-
Fair enough. Let's talk about why this time is different.
Therapy fails for two main reasons: a bad personality match, or an approach that’s all talk and no application.
I don't do rigid textbook templates, and I definitely don't expect you to do all the heavy lifting alone. I bring direct feedback, genuine humor, and proven clinical techniques so our time together actually translates to your actual life outside the office.
If past therapy felt like going in circles, we’ll change the playbook. We focus on clear goals, practical tools, and steady progress so you aren't stuck on my couch indefinitely.

EMDR, Somatics, ACT. . . Do I Really Need to Know What These Mean?
Honestly? You don't need to memorize the therapy jargon. What matters is that these are proven, practical approaches designed to help your brain and body stop overreacting to stress. Here is the plain-English breakdown:
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing): Think of this as pressing "refresh" on stuck mental loops. When past stress or trauma gets trapped in your nervous system, your brain keeps reacting like it's happening right now. EMDR helps your brain reprocess those memories so they become just plain history—not a daily trigger.
Somatic Therapy: Stress doesn't just live in your thoughts; it settles in your jaw, chest, shoulders, and stomach. Somatic work gives you physical, real-time tools to calm your body's alarm system when panic or overwhelm hits.
ACT & Practical Mindset Tools: Overthinking is exhausting. ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) helps you stop arguing with every anxious thought in your head so you can spend your energy on things that actually matter to you.
No pop quizzes, no clinical lectures—just real tools that quiet the noise so you can get back to living.

Short answer: Just like Vegas, yes. What stays in our sessions stays between us.
Long answer: Trust is the foundation of good therapy, so your privacy is strictly protected. However, like all licensed therapists in Wisconsin, I am legally and ethically required to step in under a few specific safety exceptions (governed by Wisconsin Statute 51.30):
Safety & Harm: If there is an imminent threat of serious harm to yourself or someone else.
Protection of Vulnerable Populations: If there is suspected or confirmed abuse or neglect involving a child or an elder.
Medical Emergencies: To provide necessary context to medical first responders during a genuine emergency.
Legal Orders: If required by a lawful order issued directly by a court of law.
On-Site Safety & Crimes: Threats or crimes committed against individuals or property at JC Counseling, LLC or our shared space at Beacon Counseling, LLC.
Outside of these safety boundaries, your story is completely yours.
